Evan P. Fitzgerald, Principal Watershed Scientist

Evan Fitzgerald is a 5th generation Vermonter raised in the Burlington area.  He currently lives in Colchester along the banks of the Winooski River.  Evan has a diverse educational and professional background in the natural sciences.  While pursuing a BS in Environmental Science at the University of New Hampshire, Evan became interested in forest ecology and taxonomy while walking the woods and peaks of New England.  Following his undergraduate studies, he spent time working with tropical butterflies at Costa Rica Entomological Supply in Alajuela, Costa Rica.  Upon returning to Vermont, Evan worked as an environmental consultant for several years, focusing on stormwater analysis and GIS services for the ski industry in New England.  From 2002 to 2004, Evan and his wife, Colleen Birner, served as Peace Corps Volunteers along the border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti where they taught sciences in an agroecology program for high-school students at the Centro Regional de Estudios de Alternativas Rurales.

Most recently, Evan completed a MS in Aquatic Ecology and Watershed Science at the University of Vermont’s Rubenstein School, and received a Certificate of Graduate Studies in Ecological Economics from the Gund Institute.  He worked with UVM’s Dr. Breck Bowden and Mike Kline of Vermont’s River Management Program to assess the geomorphic condition of 15 small watersheds in Chittenden County, including 9 stormwater impaired watersheds.  The results of Evan’s research have been incorporated into the TMDL approach used by VTDEC to address stormwater impaired surface waters in Vermont.

Sam recently completed a BS in Water Resources at UVM's Rubenstein School, during which time he was awarded a prestigious Undergraduate Research Endeavors Competitive Award (URECA!) grant for a stream macroinvertebrate study in Chittenden County, Vermont.  As part of Sam's URECA! grant, he worked with Evan Fitzgerald and Dr. Breck Bowden to assess land use impacts on biotic health in small watersheds in the Lake Champlain Basin.

At Fitzgerald Environmental, Sam assists with field data collection for stream geomorphic assessment surveys, data entry, and GIS analysis.
